Age 13 + - Part 2 - Performance Audition

11:15-12:45

This year, we will only be selecting between 5-10 members in each age category (not necessarily the above age categories) because we have specific choreographies in mind, and must make sure that all members are able to execute the choreography as we see fit instead of adjusting the choreography to different levels. This will allow us to finish choreographies faster, and spend more time perfecting the performance aspect of them, instead of trying to teach the required technique.

To do this in the fairest way possible, all elements of the audition will be judged between 1-5 points and we will be selecting the students who have top marks. Please remember that if a student is not accepted, their attitude afterward will affect whether or not they are chosen the following year.

To make this system the fairest possible, we will have guest judges this year and the results will be the average between Erin, Isabelle and the guest judge.

General Information

  • Students interested in auditioning must fill out the pre-audition form on the website. This form will be available as of 8:00pm on Wednesday, June 6th.

  • Students must arrive 25 minutes in advance to get their audition number and conduct their own warm-up. During Evolve rehearsals students are expected to properly warm themselves up, so this is part of the audition process as well.

  • Students must wear appropriate black dance attire, bare feet or foot undies, & girls must have hair pulled back into a clean ponytail.

  • During the year, competitive dancers must take at least 3 technical classes, including ballet and jazz in order to have the technical ability for the choreographies we have in mind. There will be no exceptions to this rule.

  • We will be attending 2 competitions during the year, announced by August/September.

  • No student with an outstanding balance will be eligible to audition.

Technical Portion of Audition

  • The audition will be conducted using a point system. Each element we are looking at must meet a required score in order for participant to be considered. Why are we doing this? During rehearsals, students will be learning choreography at a fast pace and there will be no time to teach the technical elements. Competitive dancers should already have the required technique, and make sure they maintain and improve further during the year. If a student is not chosen because of specific elements, they will know what they need to work on in order to audition again the following year.

  • We will be listing the major elements that will be judged so that students can prepare themselves, know what is expected of them, and have an idea of what to practice. The technical requirements we will be judging out of a score of 5 for each age devision will be as follows:

All Levels will have the opportunity to show up to 3 extra skills that thy would like us to consider for extra points. These skills can be jumps or tricks that are not included in the above criteria, and must be prepared ahead of time so that it does not take too much time.

All Levels Part 2: Performance

All levels will learn between 1-3 dance combinations that should be treated as a choreography by the student. We will be looking at how quickly they can pick up the sample choreography, if they are willing to try new things, their attitudes towards themselves and others, and most importantly, the execution of the performance.

No student will be accepted this year if they cannot perform the required emotions in the choreography in both their face and body, no matter how good their technical elements are. We want to build a competitive team that is able to dance both technically and emotionally, and we will not be spending rehearsal time trying to push this out of the dancers.
