Ballet
The ballet classes available at movement.workshop are a combination of the Russian and Italian techniques of Vaganova and Cecchetti. The classes for both children and teens work progressively to train the body through exercises at the barre, across the floor and centre work. As the classes advance, so do the disciplines involved, resulting in a well trained dancer. Ballet gives the dancer an awareness of body placement and technique which will advance them in any other area of dance.
Modern-Contemporary
The Contemporary Dance classes offered at movement.workshop stem from the modern dance technique. As it breaks free from the traditional physical constraints of ballet , it explores the fluidity and freedom which comes natural to the body's instinctual reaction to movement. The classes focus on elements such as specific articulation of feet, legs, and propulsion, centering, alignment, breath, rhythm, contraction, fall and recovery, tension, and exploration of the vertical axis of movement.
Tap
Tap Dance is a uniquely North American dance form which evolved from Afro-American, Irish, Spanish, and German folkdances. Tap dancing is characterized by striking the floor with the foot to create sound, thus the performer is not only a dancer but a musician as well. Explore rhythm and musicality in styles such as Broadway, Swing, and Hoofer. Tap will tone up your legs, keep your mind sharp, and you don’t need a specific body type or tights to do it! Just a pair of tap shoes (or hard soled shoes).
Jazz
Jazz Dance is exciting and powerful and is another unique North American dance form. With roots in Classical Jazz music and Ballet, jazz is performed to contemporary music with an emphasis of isolations, kicks, jumps, and turns. It can be powerful and percussive or expressive and lyrical.
Urban
Urban Dance is an umbrella term covering hip hop, breakdance, funk-styles, and other pop-culture dance forms. Urban focuses on style, isolations, percussive movement and fluidity. Class will cover classic steps and newer innovations from this ever evolving dance form. Street Jazz is the term used for a combination of Urban and Jazz. This adds elements of proper jazz technique to create a truly fun and entertaining class.
